Moving to the US can be a life changing decision and should not to be taken lightly. Here are five points to consider as you look to start the immigration process:
1. Your situation is unique
Each person has different options based on their nationality, objectives and time frames. No two cases are alike, so your legal strategy needs to be geared to your particular set of circumstances. Consult an experienced immigration attorney to learn what is best for you and who can guide and assist you throughout the entire process.
2. This is a life changing decision
Do it right the first time and save yourself headache and additional costs. The cheapest option is not always the best option. You need to submit a file that not only has the required paperwork, but also is complete with supporting evidence. Providing less than necessary may cause problems, however providing more than necessary will not; so always over include and increase your probability of success and changing your life.
3. Be realistic about your options and your goals
There are many ways to come to the US. Permanent and temporary options are available and can be applied for together or in the best order to achieve your goals. If you are getting married, coming as an investor or trying to enter on a work visa, understand what your options are and how to go about achieving your goals. Oftentimes, the process takes many steps, so always be prepared for each stage. Understand all of the risks, rewards and costs before you sign or pay for anything. Understand as well that there are factors that may influence the process that neither you nor anyone else can control.
4. Always sign a contract
When agreeing to use an attorney, you should be aware of what exactly you will receive and what each side’s responsibilities are – all this should be in writing. All fees and stipulations should be laid out in the contract and you should understand everything before you sign – not after. Ask for a flat fee for the services to be provided. You should only work with a qualified attorney who operates in a professional manner. Understand all of the risks, rewards and costs before you sign or pay for anything.
5. Be Patient
The immigration process to come and live in the US is a complex and time-consuming series of steps. Be aware of all deadlines and requirements and then manage your expectations. Collect the required documents as soon as possible. Often there will be a request for additional information, but as the goal is to immigrate to the US, either permanently or temporarily, the outcome will certainly be worth the patience.
Overall, the immigration process is long and can be exceptionally complicated, but with the above guidelines, and with the help of a qualified attorney, the application can be done correctly and competently. The end result will lead to new opportunities for a better life, for you and your family.
